STORM 1200x

Beyond Bi-color

WATCH THE KEYNOTE

Ted and the Aputure team walk you through the revolutionary new design of the STORM 1200x, the BLAIR light engine, and the product family as a whole.

INTRODUCING BLAIR

The STORM 1200x utilizes a new BLAIR five-color (Blue/Lime/Amber/Indigo/Red) light engine to better fill out the color spectrum while offering greater adjustability.

EXPERIENCE FULL SPECTRUM

The calibrated Indigo enhances fluorescing materials, resulting in a higher quality white light that better matches natural daylight and black body sources such as tungsten quartz, CRI 95+, SSI [P3200]): 87, SSI (CIE D5600): 87.

SEE THE DIFFERENCE

We compared the color response for natural daylight, a traditional bi-color LED, and the STORM 1200x together and found huge, but subtle differences in the objects that fluoresce.

BEST COLOR ADJUSTABILITY

The BLAIR Light Engine enables the STORM 1200x to offer a greater range of CCT than traditional bi-colors and is the first light of its kind to offer 100% +/- Green control, the full ASC MITC range of adjustment.

INTRODUCING XY CONTROL

The STORM 1200x has so much color range Aputure has even added an x,y Coordinate mode for greater precision control.

PRECISION LOW-END DIMMING

Bit-depth control is increased for improved low-end dimming. This enables the STORM 1200x to use PWM dimming all the way down to 0.1% without shifts or dropoff. Color accuracy is maintained throughout the brightness range, even at extreme low brightness levels.

ProLock Locking Bowens Mount

The STORM lights feature the ProLock Locking Bowens Mount, a more secure clamping design for attaching modifiers. Bowens accessories are held rigidly in place and precision optics such as fresnels and Spotlight projectors are precisely aligned with the light engine.

IP65 Weather Protection

Head-to-toe IP65 dust and weather protection means the STORM 1200x can work in extreme environments. Seals on every connector and around components allow not only the lamp head but also the control box and cabling to be used outside in the rain.

EVERY CONTROL OPTION OUT THERE

The Storm 1200x features all of the professional connectivity options used in modern lighting: CRMX, DMX512 in and out, sACN and Art-Net over etherCON, and Sidus Mesh.

NEW ACCESSORIES Coming soon

The STORM 1200x and product family will come with brand-new accessories that are optimized for brightness and versatility, such as an all-new Compact Fresnel and Skid.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why are there no white LEDs in the BLAIR light engine?

The BLAIR light engine comprises five colors of LED emitters, Blue/Lime/Amber/Indigo/Red. These five colors are mixed to create a rich white light spectrum. By varying the levels the color temperature can be adjusted from 2500K to 10,000K and Green bias can be shifted by a 100% +/- range, as prescribed by the ASC MITC standard. The STORM 1200x also has an x,y coordinate mode which allows the full range of color adjustment available with the BLAIR light engine.

Why is there an Indigo emitter in the BLAIR light Engine?

Real daylight, tungsten quartz, and other full-spectrum natural light sources output UV and near-UV light. While such light is not very visible to the human eye, the effect it has on many surfaces is. Under this near-UV light, these surfaces will fluoresce, reflecting back light brightly at a wavelength that humans (and our cameras) see. Detergent and toothpaste manufacturers use this phenomenon to make our clothing and teeth appear brighter and whiter, but fluorescing occurs naturally on many surfaces including skin, eyes, and fingernails. The addition of the Indigo emitter in the BLAIR light engine replicates the near-UV of real daylight and tungsten, making it the first LED light to truly replace natural light.

Why does the BLAIR light engine have a Lime emitter instead of a Green one?

The BLAIR light engine in the STORM 1200x is optimized to deliver the best tunable white light at the highest brightness per watt. A large part of the visible spectrum is in the green range, but it is weighted more towards Lime than true technical Green. By using a Lime emitter, the BLAIR light engine outputs higher light levels. This increased efficiency is part of the reason why when set to 5600K the STORM 1200x, a tunable white light, is brighter than the 5600K-only LS 1200d Pro.

What is the difference between Blackbody and CIE Daylight?

There are two White Light Standards, Blackbody and CIE Daylight. Blackbody is the color that items burn at different temperatures and is a mathematically-derived standard. CIE Daylight takes into account the natural shift to slightly green that the Earth’s atmosphere introduces to daylight. The CIE Daylight standard is slightly shifted green compared to the Blackbody standard above 4000K, which is the color temperature range associated with daylight. The STORM 1200x can switch its White Light Standard to Blackbody or CIE Daylight. Whether you need to match other LED lights that are calibrated to the Blackbody standard or you are matching real daylight, the STORM 1200x allows you to switch between the standards.

What is the ProLock Mount?

The STORM 1200x features a new clamping Bowens mount, the ProLock. The ProLock is fast and easy to use to mount Bowens modifiers, and it holds them securely in place. The outer ring screws down onto the Bowens modifier, locking it to the light so that the modifier will not shift or wobble. Optical modifiers such as the Spotlight Max will not shift or sag in the mount, keeping them correctly aligned to the light for the best optical performance.

How big is the STORM 1200x?

The STORM 1200x is about the same size as the LS 1200d Pro. The lamp head (not including the yoke) is 13.2 x 13.2 x 9.8in and weighs (with the yoke) 9.5kg. The control box is 5.4 x 7.4 x 33.2in and weighs 5.92kg.

Does the STORM 1200x require special modifiers?

The Storm 1200x comes with a 45° Hyper Reflector. There is a Reflector Kit available for the light which includes 15° and 30° Hyper Reflectors in a padded carrying case. These are specifically tuned for optimal performance with the STORM 1200x. The Spotlight Max, Dome 150 and Lantern 90 all fit and work with the STORM 1200x. Coming soon will be a new compact Fresnel.

What does extreme low-end dimming mean?

Sometimes you need a very bright light and sometimes you need it to get very dim. The STORM 1200x utilizes two types of dimming controls to enable it to dim to very low light levels while maintaining excellent color accuracy. While other similar-wattage lights may say that they dim to 0.1%, at this setting they can be up to eight times brighter than the STORM 1200x.
