Does the name C. S. Lewis ring a bell? We bet it does, because this literary genius gave the world its beloved Narnia series, among his many other famous works like The Screwtape Letters. We got as close as we possibly could to this late novelist/scholar early this month when his stepson, Mr. Douglas Gresham, dropped by our store in Marina Square for a visit with his wife, Merrie! What a delightful surprise!
Before we blog about our star-strucked experience, let's start with a little introduction about the man himself. Besides being recognised as family to C. S. Lewis, Mr. Gresham is a biographer and film producer in his own right. His autobiography, Lenten Lands: My Childhood with Joy Davidman and C. S. Lewis, is the inspiration behind the 1993 movie Shadowlands, and he is heavily involved as co-producer in the movie adaptations of The Chronicles of Narnia and The Screwtape Letters. How did we know all these? We googled, of course!
Humble and unassuming as he is, there were no formal introductions made when the couple walked into our store looking for a particular camera, although his charisma hinted at something more. Over the course of conversation between our sales colleague Patrick and the lovely couple, Mr. Gresham let on that he is a film producer and that they are on their way to Australia for the filming of the next instalment in the Narnia series which, from what we gathered, would be The Voyage of the Dawn Treader.
Totally charmed by Mr. and Mrs. Gresham by that time, our sales team at Marina Square requested for a group photo which they readily agreed to! There were no airs about them and it wasn't until after they left our store that we realised just exactly who they are - aren't they just so modest?
